Creative Classrooms Visual Arts Program
Every student at St. Mark participates in the Creative Classrooms Visual Arts Program (CCVAP) which fosters creativity and self-expression through weekly studio art classes. Under the guidance of a trained Teaching Artist, the children create paintings, drawings, sculptures, collages, and mixed media projects using a variety of materials and techniques. Projects range from pastel self-portraits and watercolor landscapes to designing comic books and weaving.
Our sixth graders recently completed a unit on the acclaimed Harlem artist Romare Bearden whose work at the local Studio Museum inspired them to create collages of their neighborhoods. Creative Classrooms promotes literacy and critical thinking while also providing students with fun, hands-on activities. Select student artwork is exhibited in the school and at local hospitals.
