  • St. Mark Welcomes Principal Aaron Dukes

    After a nationwide search for an outstanding leader, the Partnership was thrilled to hire its top candidate, Aaron Dukes, as the new St. Mark principal. Mr. Dukes is an Alabama native and a graduate of Alabama State University. He began his career as a classroom teacher, and he was twice voted runner-up for the Alabama state Teacher of the Year. More recently, Mr. Dukes has served as assistant principal of the Congress Heights campus in the Center City Public Charter Schools (CCPCS) network in Washington, D.C.

  • 2015 Annual Benefit Raises Over $50,000

    On April 20th, St. Mark the Evangelist held its 12th Annual Benefit at Mutual of America to celebrate St. Mark’s ongoing impact on the lives of children in Harlem. The cocktail reception was a huge success. Our two alumni speakers, Ms. Leslie Mitchell (C ’95) and Dr. Leslie Hayes (C ’74), were the highlight of the evening. Due to the generosity of our board members, alumni, parents and many old and new friends, more than $50,000 was raised.

  • After-School Continues to Expand

    Under the guidance of the Partnership, the after-school program at St. Mark has gone through dramatic improvements during the 2014-15 school year. The ultimate goal of after-school at St. Mark is to offer a range of classes to appeal to a variety of interests. The school has worked hard to create new programming  for the students to enjoy.

  • “Spring Speaker Series” Launches

    This spring, our 6th and 7th graders were treated to Career Day and our first ever “Spring Speaker Series” which featured prominent African-American professionals who grew up in New York City. The presentations, held at St. Mark, were meant to provide a forum for career exploration and to demonstrate what can be accomplished with hard work and dedication. Speakers also shared lessons they learned on their paths to success.

  • Discovering Fire with Lauren DelFavero, Director of Math Achievement

    Selected by Kathleen Porter-Magee to join the Partnership’s academic team, Lauren DelFavero serves as Director of Math Achievement. Ms. DelFavero comes to the Partnership most recently from Success Academy Charter Schools. Last year, all of her 5th graders passed the NY State math test with 96% of students scoring “fours” – the highest level. A self-described teacher from the word “go”, Ms. DelFavero looks forward to achieving the same results for all students in the network.

  • Saint Mark Students Join the Battle Against Cancer in Harlem

    On October 31st, St. Mark students participated in one of our school’s community-minded traditions – the Dress Down Day. Every year on Dress Down Day, St. Mark students make a monetary contribution to a selected charity to avail themselves of wearing their usual school uniform. This year, the funds raised will go to support the Breast Examination Center of Harlem – an institution in our community that has helped countless cancer patients and their families in their battle with cancer.

  • Families Pack St. Mark’s Gymnasium for the Annual Back to School Night

    The St. Mark family officially launched the 2014-2015 academic year with a night focused on new and exciting academic and student enrichment initiatives. Principal Antwan Allen spoke to the parents about the new Math and ELA curricula as well as the Common Core standards. During classroom presentations which followed, teachers discussed with parents grade specific plans to boost student learning and performance on critical standardized tests. The main takeaway of the evening was the critical importance of the parent-school partnership in educating the whole child and ensuring the success of our students. We are looking forward to a terrific school year!

  • Ballroom Dance Team Shines in Competition

    The 8th Grade Ballroom Dance Team won Gold at the Winter Team Match and went on to win Silver at the Grand Final on June 21st.  They performed the swing, foxtrot, merengue, salsa, and tango.  All 4th, 5th, and 8th graders at St. Mark’s take ballroom dance lessons through Dancing Classrooms.  Their participation is generously funded by Brad and Barbara Evans.

  • Students Band Together in Concert Band

    In tune with the rich musical history of Harlem, St. Mark the Evangelist School has formed a concert band.  The band launched in October with thirty-two eager students under the direction of music teacher Rachel Bidwell.  Rehearsing three times a week, the group features eight instruments – flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, and percussion.  All students in Grades 5-8 are eligible to join.  The band is organized under the guidance of Education Through Music and is generously supported by grants from the Raskob Foundation and the Office of Black Ministry.

  • Students Compete in the Partnership Network Chess Tournament

    On April 11th, St. Mark’s students participated in the first annual Partnership Network Chess Tournament, where they met and competed against children from the other five Catholic schools in the Partnership Network.  Students in Grades 2-5 who are enrolled in our after-school program take weekly chess lessons with instructors from Chess NYC.

  • Prominent Children’s Author Visits St. Mark’s

    Award-winning children’s author Jacqueline Woodson visited St. Mark’s to discuss her writing with our 6th grade class.  Ms. Woodson, a New York City resident, has written over thirty books and earned multiple Newbery Honors among other awards.  Our 6th graders enjoyed reading her novel Miracle’s Boys, which won the Coretta Scott King Award in 2001.  It tells the tale of three orphaned, biracial brothers growing up in Harlem.

    St. Mark the Evangelist School is thrilled to be one of six Catholic schools in Harlem and the South Bronx that have joined the new Partnership for Inner-City Education network.  These six schools, serving Pre-K through 8th grade, will now be managed by the Partnership for Inner-City Education in collaboration with the Archdiocese of New York.  The Partnership has been integral to St. Mark’s for many years, and the new network will help us to build on our strong Catholic school foundation to prepare our students for success in high school, college, and beyond.

    St. Mark’s was thrilled to host the successful on June 9th, 2013, welcoming graduates young and old to return to their alma mater.  Our guests represented eight decades of celebrated history at St. Mark’s!  The student gospel choir, Voices of Praise, performed at Mass at St. Mark the Evangelist Church and received a standing ovation.  Afterward, alumni enjoyed a delicious brunch catered by Spoonbread in Bishop Perry Hall.  St. Mark’s cherishes its alumni and is blessed to have a strong community supporting the school. Thank you to all our alumni who attended!
