Day In the Life

In Pre-Kindergarten at St. Mark, our curious and creative students build a strong foundation for the future.  Three-year-olds and four-year-olds interact in an open classroom setting and explore their surroundings in meaningful ways.  The students enjoy hands-on, sensory-based learning as they attain fundamental skills in reading, writing, and math.  Teachers pay special attention to the intellectual, motor, social, and emotional development of every child.  The school day lasts from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., allowing students to soak up a full day of knowledge.

Kindergarteners at St. Mark enjoy a dynamic and rigorous school day.  The class follows an advanced reading curriculum and devotes 90 minutes each day to math.  Students interact with the SMART Board on a daily basis and visit the computer lab regularly.  They also exude creativity and energy in weekly art, music, and physical education classes.  Kindergarten teaches our students to think critically, to express themselves effectively, and to fall in love with learning.

In 1st and 2nd grade, teachers place a strong focus on literacy, devoting two blocks a day to phonics instruction, vocabulary development, and effective writing.  Students also spend two blocks a day in math as they study basic computation and universal number patterns.  In addition, students learn about the practical applications of math pertaining to time, money, and measurement.  Class instruction fosters critical thinking, independence, and creativity.  The students also enjoy art, music, and physical education classes on a weekly basis.

In 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade, students delve into literary analysis, reading works of both fiction and non-fiction.  They learn to conduct research, to make arguments, and to support their claims with evidence.  The math curriculum introduces multiplication, division, fractions, and word problems.  Group work becomes increasingly important as students develop the ability to compromise and to share responsibility.  Students also have the privilege to take ballroom dance and art history lessons in addition to their studio art, music, and physical education classes.

Middle school at St. Mark provides greater emphasis on project-based learning, encouraging students to combine skills and exercise creativity in multi-step assignments.  The teachers design integrated units which involve crossover between subjects.  In English Language Arts, students practice expository writing while also composing narrative essays and poetry.  Pre-algebra is approached in math class and career readiness is developed in the Classroom, Inc. program.  Our students are well prepared for high school and are given individualized attention as they navigate the application process and chart their futures.
